Dynamics of knowledge diffusion: the ICT sector in Lombardy

Abstract: This paper analyses the evolution of the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in Lombardy, with a specific focus on the Milan metropolitan area, where most major ICT firms are located. Until the early 1990s, Lombardy’s firms enjoyed a technological advantage, which led to relevant profits, innovative products on the markets, and the emergence of a competitive ICT district. While, despite a remarkable process of restructuring of the industry following the end of the Communist era, the ICT industry in Košice can be mostly portrayed as an imitative innovation pattern, the same industry in Lombardy presents radical elements of pattern shift, although from an endogenous, to a creative application pattern of innovation.…”

“…Šipikal et al (2003) examined the software industry in the Slovak Kosice region and explained the knowledge creation and acquisition processes in this area. ICT sector is researched in terms of the development of the ICT sector in relation to the knowledge-based economy as well (Caragliu, 2013;Šipikal et al, 2013). In the context of the knowledge-based economy, the authors' interests focus on the causes for localization of the ICT firms and on the issue of the regional disparities (Mantegazza et al, 2005;Hudec and Šebová, 2011;Rehak et al, 2013).…”
