Tracking the evolution of an individual nanodroplet of liquid in real-time remains an outstanding challenge. Here a miniature optomechanical resonator detects a single nanodroplet landing on a surface and measures its subsequent evaporation down to a volume of twenty attoliters. The ultra-high mechanical frequency and sensitivity of the device enable a time resolution below the millisecond, sufficient to resolve the fast evaporation dynamics under ambient conditions. Using the device dual optical and mechanical capability, we determine the evaporation in the first ten milliseconds to occur at constant contact radius with a dynamics ruled by the mere Kelvin effect, producing evaporation despite a saturated surrounding gas. Over the following hundred of milliseconds, the droplet further shrinks while being accompanied by the spreading of an underlying puddle. In the final steady-state after evaporation, an extended thin liquid film is stabilized on the surface. Our optomechanical technique opens the unique possibility of monitoring all these stages in real-time.

Incorporation of biological systems in water nanodroplets has recently emerged as a new frontier to investigate structural changes of biomolecules, with perspective applications in ultra-fast drug delivery. We report on the molecular dynamics of the digestive protein Pepsin subjected to a double confinement. The double confinement stemmed from embedding the protein inside a water nanodroplet, which in turn was caged in a nanochannel mimicking the mesoporous silica SBA-15. The nano-bio-droplet, whose size fits with the pore diameter, behaved differently depending on the protonation state of the pore surface silanols. Neutral channel sections allowed for the droplet to flow, while deprotonated sections acted as anchoring piers for the droplet. Inside the droplet, the protein, not directly bonded to the surface, showed a behavior similar to that reported for bulk water solutions, indicating that double confinement should not alter its catalytic activity. Our results suggest that nanobiodroplets, recently fabricated in volatile environments, can be encapsulated and stored in mesoporous silicas.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation on Behaviors of Water Nanodroplets Impinging on Moving Surfaces

Droplets impinging on solid surfaces is a common phenomenon. However, the motion of surfaces remarkably influences the dynamical behaviors of droplets, and related research is scarce. Dynamical behaviors of water nanodroplets impinging on translation and vibrating solid copper surfaces were investigated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The dynamical characteristics of water nanodroplets with various Weber numbers were studied at four translation velocities, four vibration amplitudes, and five vibration periods of the surface. The results show that when water nanodroplets impinge on translation surfaces, water molecules not only move along the surfaces but also rotate around the centroid of the water nanodroplet at the relative sliding stage. Water nanodroplets spread twice in the direction perpendicular to the relative sliding under a higher surface translation velocity. Additionally, a formula for water nanodroplets velocity in the translation direction was developed. Water nanodroplets with a larger Weber number experience a heavier friction force. For cases wherein water nanodroplets impinge on vibration surfaces, the increase in amplitudes impedes the spread of water nanodroplets, while the vibration periods promote it. Moreover, the short-period vibration makes water nanodroplets bounce off the surface.
