Dynamics of Oxidative Stress Evoked by Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion After Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Elucidated by Bilirubin Oxidation

Abstract: Background: Revascularization therapy relieves myocardial ischemia, but can also result in ischemia-reperfusion injury caused by oxidative stress. However, the biokinetics of oxidative stress after myocardial ischemia-reperfusion are uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the dynamics of oxidative stress after off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) by measuring urinary biopyrrin levels. Biopyrrin is an oxidative metabolite of bilirubin thought to reflect oxidative stress, along with reactive nitroge… Show more

“…This finding suggests that patients with chronic schizophrenia are under a certain kind of oxidative stress, and our results also suggest that the UBP level is more associated with school stress than the 8OHdG level. 8OHdG is produced through reactions between nuclear DNA and ROS [31], whereas UBP is produced through reactions between bilirubin and ROS [12]. This difference in their production processes might underlie the greater promise of UBP as a mental stress marker [32].…”

“…Biopyrrins are end products of the oxidation reaction of the suicide antioxidant bilirubin with reactive oxygen species (ROS) ( Figure 1) [12]. An increase in bilirubin consumption owing to oxidative stress is reflected through an increased level of urinary biopyrrins (UBP).…”

“…Finally, the reported antioxidant activities of M. longifolia (Murad et al, 2016) could be one of the possible ways by which it alleviates experimentally induced angina. The oxidative stress plays a very important role in the cardiac injury after ischemia-reperfusion (Yamamoto, Nishimori, Fukutomi, Yamaguchi, & Orihashi, 2017).…”

“…The explanation for these findings is likely to be the increased consumption of bilirubin. The oxidized metabolites of bilirubin in urine were designated as biopyrrins and reported to be increased in pathological oxidative stress-related conditions [25][26][27].…”
