Dynamics of Peripheral Blood Lymphocyte Subpopulations in the Acute and Subacute Phase of Legionnaires’ Disease

Abstract: Study ObjectiveAbsolute lymphocytopenia is recognised as an important hallmark of the immune response to severe infection and observed in patients with Legionnaires’ disease. To explore the immune response, we studied the dynamics of peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations in the acute and subacute phase of LD.Methods and ResultsEDTA-anticoagulated blood was obtained from eight patients on the day the diagnosis was made through detection of L. pneumophila serogroup 1 antigen in urine. A second blood sample … Show more

“…21 De Jager and colleagues in the years 2006-2007 in the Netherlands in a case -control study of patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia found 8 patients with L. pneumophila٫4 patients (50%) were smoking. 19 Smoking rates in these studies were higher than our study. This may be due to: (1) lower consumption of cigarettes by our patients (2) we have not defined smoking alike.…”

“…18 In other studies age was high and the majority was men. 19,20 In the present study our patients were younger than patients in other studies, one of the reasons could be the difference in life expectancy in different countries on the other hand may be at a lower incidence of pneumonia in our region that these cases need to be investigated further. In our study a little percentage of patients (3.6%) had positive urinary antigen.…”

“…Indeed, 82.6% of the patients in our study cohort suffered from chronic comorbidity. In addition, another partial explanation for the shorter telomeres upon PICU admission could be the acute rise in the fraction of neutrophils within the white blood cell population of critically ill patients, as neutrophils have shorter telomeres than lymphocytes [ 27 , 28 ].…”

“…has concluded that absolute lymphocytopenia is associated with patients having severe Legionnaires' disease. [ 10 ] In addition, Fox et al . used lymphocytopenia as an early marker in patients with H1N1 flu infections.…”
