Dynamics of tiller populations of standard height and semi-dwarf wheats

Abstract: The effects of sowing rate and N fertiliser on tiller populations in field-sown wheat were investigated. Two cultivars were evaluated, a semi-dwarf wheat cv. "Kararnu" and a standard height wheat cv. "Kopara". The number of tille~s represented in a population was related to their order of appearance, namely: main stem, Tiller 1, Tiller 2, Tiller 3, Tiller 4, and secondary tillers. The maximum rate of tiller production in the semi-dwarf exceeded 450 tillers/rnvweek whereas the standard height wheat reached a ra… Show more

“…Tillering is an intraspecific mechanism to regulate plasticity in small grains and can respond positively to N fertilizer or plant population density (Evers, Vos, Andrieu, & Struik, 2006). High‐density stands tend to result in greater biomass and N uptake (Chen et al., 2019; Fraser, Dougherty, & Langer, 1982; Marcillo et al., 2019).…”

“…4). Previously, studies have also linked tiller abortion with the onset of stem elongation and anthesis suggesting that tiller death (abortion) is due, partly to resource competition (Mohamed and Marshall 1979;Kemp and Whingwiri 1980;Fraser et al 1982;Davidson and Chevalier 1990;Berry et al 2003;Xie et al 2016). This suggests a benefit of resource diversion to the main culm for improved spikelet fertility that is otherwise spent on tiller development and maintenance, the fate of which is usually uncertain.…”
