Dyslexia in higher education

Abstract: The number of students with learning disabilities in post-secondary institutions has grown substantially, and those with dyslexia compile the largest subgroup. This study explores the utility conceptualization of dyslexia by analyzing the subjective experiences of 30 students from two 2-year institutions. “…By using survey design, future researchers can provide compelling results for policy development and design of interventions to increase parent involvement in secondary transition and student self-determination. Last, there is a demand for learning disability researchers to examine self-determination interventions for students with dyslexia considering they are the largest subgroup of students with LD (Richardson, 2021). The majority of participants in this study had dyslexia, but in-depth inquiry on students with dyslexia was not focus of this study.…”

“…Besides the role of the government, the teachers also play a major role in the success of inclusive education since they are the ones who facilitate and promote learning to the students (Ackah-Jnr, 2020; Awada & Plana, 2018;Kauffman, 2021). Therefore, teachers are expected to have the knowledge, skills, and expertise to create inclusive learning environments that can assist dyslexic students through the use of effective and appropriate teaching strategies (Gregory, 2021;Knight, 2018). Several studies have been conducted to investigate the implementation of certain, appropriate strategies to teach EFL dyslexic students.…”

“…Twenty years ago, dyslexia was less commonly recognized in university populations. Since then, there has been a substantial increase in the prevalence of dyslexia among university students (Richardson 2021). Multiple understandings of dyslexia have emerged, and the conceptualization of the condition is contested (Elliott 2020).…”
