Dysregulation of Pulmonary Responses in Severe COVID-19

Abstract: Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) predominantly have a respiratory tract infection with various symptoms and high mortality is associated with respiratory failure second to severe disease. The risk factors leading to severe disease remain unclear. Here, we reanalyzed a published single-cell RNA-Seq (scRNA-Seq) dataset and found that bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of patients with severe disease compared to those with mild disease contained decreased TH17 type cells, decreased IFNA1 express… Show more

“…This study further established the key role of TLR7 signalling in the host defence against SARS-CoV-2 infection. It has also been demonstrated in nasal tissue, bronchoalveolar lavage and peripheral blood mononuclear cells extracted from COVID-19 patients that expression levels of TLR7 correlated with disease severity [92,93].…”

“…10,11 Researchers from China are optimistic about the virus prevention and control, as the proportion of severe and critical COVID-19 cases among all con rmed cases in China has dropped signi cantly from 16.47% in 2020 to 0.18% by December 5, 2022. 12 However, other researchers have a more cautious outlook, which emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant as the outbreak is still ongoing. 13 On Dec 7, 2022, the Chinese government announced ten measures indicating the end of the zero COVID policy.…”
