Abstract:SummaryIntraepithelial lymphocytes expressing the γδ T cell receptor (γδ IELs) provide immunosurveillance of the intestinal barrier. Interestingly, γδ IEL number is reduced in patients with active Crohn’s disease (CD). Here, we report an underappreciated role for γδ IELs in maintaining mucosal tolerance during the onset and progression of CD-like ileitis using the TNFΔARE/+mouse model. Decreased epithelial HNF4G/BTNL expression is followed by a loss of ileal γδ IELs and impaired barrier surveillance prior to t… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
