e-Portfolio Competency Metadata: Pilot Study for a Call to Action

Abstract: The six competency domains required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) have led to a proliferation of measurement tools, assessment methods, and all forms of data from paper to electronic. The need exists to develop a standardized electronic (e)-portfolio to provide the aggregate data to improve education and patient care. This process requires a sound methodology using XML metadata to allow portability of e-portfolio data. We surveyed publicly available metadata and developed … Show more

“…In education, ePortfolios are used to support teaching and learning. They not only store achievements but also show the processes of reaching those achievements (Rao et al, 2012). ePortfolios are used to document competencies and examine how students reflected on their competency development process (Zawacki-Richter and Hanft, 2011).…”

“…Thus, we can see that ePortfolio systems are potential platforms for fostering SRL because of their capacities for measuring learning outcomes and for reflective learning. ePortfolio systems are reliable tools for learners' competencies measuring [21,22], this characteristic aligns with capacity for measures of SRL that described in [18,23]. In addition, ePortfolio systems are relevant environments for reflection, and collaboration between students, or students and teachers, this advantage allows using ePortfolio systems as platforms for practicing SRL processes -an important factor in fostering SRL [16,24].…”

“…Implementation of an electronic portfolio contributes to its accessibility and usability [11] by structuring and categorizing the stored data, and is recommended by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and has recently become mandatory for all residents in the Netherlands [4 ]. Rao et al [4 ] estimated the advantage of standardization in portfolio use and systems to promote data to be portable and comparable allowing its use throughout the training in different medical institutions.…”

“…Physician core competencies as described by the Canadian Medical Educational Directives (CanMEDS) and the ACGME have created a framework for residency training and are widely used for the assignment of certification [4 ]. Portfolios allow assessment of these competency requirements as they contain a multitude of documents, assessments and evaluations considering knowledge, skills, research and presentations [8].…”
