E-transportation: the role of embedded systems in electric energy transfer from grid to vehicle

Abstract: Electric vehicles (EVs) are a promising solution to reduce the transportation dependency on oil, as well as the environmental concerns. Realization of E-transportation relies on providing electrical energy to the EVs in an effective way. Energy storage system (ESS) technologies, including batteries and ultra-capacitors, have been significantly improved in terms of stored energy and power. Beside technology advancements, a battery management system is necessary to enhance safety, reliability and efficiency of t… Show more

“…Wireless power transmission (WPT) for wireless charging is gaining wide attraction from both academia and industry as a promising approach to miniaturize batteries and increase the maximum total range of an EV [4][5][6][7][8]. Qualcomm and other leading companies believe that the convenient and improved user experience brought by the simple, fast charging provided by wireless charging will be the key to the spread of EVs [9][10][11][12].…”

“…Without regulation and control, charging simultaneously a large number of EVs can cause disruption to the stability of the whole power system. The rising demand of electricity requires enhanced control of distribution management system (DMS), having the capability and tools to utilize the capacity harnessed from EVs-their ability of acting as distributed energy storages and power generation units for the grid [23][24][25][26].…”
