EARLINET: potential operationality of a research network

Abstract: Abstract. In the framework of ACTRIS summer 2012 measurement campaign (8 June–17 July 2012), EARLINET organized and performed a controlled exercise of feasibility to demonstrate its potential to perform operational, coordinated measurements and deliver products in near-real time. Eleven lidar stations participated to the exercise which started on 9 July 2012 at 06:00 UT and ended 72 h later on 12 July at 06:00 UT. For the first time the Single-Calculus Chain (SCC), the common calculus chain developed within EA… Show more

“…The lidar signals have a raw vertical resolution of a few meters and the final products have an effective resolution of a few hundred meters depending on filtering procedures and smoothness constraints used in the retrieval . The vertical resolution of the models, on the other hand, is typically coarser but depends on the vertical resolution of the meteorological driver (Simmons and Burridge, 1981;Mesinger, 1984). When performing a statistical comparison, the different vertical resolutions are less important as the features of individual dust transport cases will be smoothed.…”

“…The Barcelona EARLINET station is located in an urban area of Barcelona in North-East of Spain, (41.389º N, 2.112º E, 115 m altitude asl), quite near the seashore of the western Mediterranean Sea (Pappalardo et al, 2015). The Granada EARLINET station is located in Granada city in the southern part of Spain (37.164º N, 3.60º5 W, 680 m altitude asl).…”

“…The instrumentation used in this study consists of sun-photometer and lidar systems, located in the stations of Barcelona and Granada. The synergic combination of sun-photometers and lidars enables to improve the knowledge on optical and microphysical properties of aerosols and their vertical distribution (Sicard et al, 2015).…”

“…Remote sensing profiling measurements can be used to improve dust modeling efforts at three different levels: diagnostic evaluation, near-real-time (NRT) evaluation, and assimilation (Seigneur et al, 2000;Sicard et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2014). In this study, we focus on the diagnostic evaluation of the model performance.…”
