Early Adopters of Patient-Generated Health Data Upload in an Electronic Patient Portal

Abstract: Background and Objective Patient-generated health data (PGHD) may help providers monitor patient status between clinical visits. Our objective was to describe our medical center's early experience with an electronic flowsheet allowing patients to upload self-monitored blood glucose to their provider's electronic health record (EHR). Methods An academic multispecialty practice enabled the portal-linked PGHD tool in 2012. We conducted a retrospective observational study of adult ambulatory patients u… Show more

“…Data interoperability is one of the main drawbacks of deployed solutions/systems where users are "constrained" within one application for a task and move between the applications to view/review the patient information. 19,[39][40][41] Further improvements are required such as adding diet information, ethnicity, location, socioeconomic status, living status, and other social factors that could have a significant influence on the healthy and active lifestyle for managing T2DM and delaying the prediabetes. “…It is clear that there are many advantages to CAHT; however, its limitations could explain the slow rates of adoption of patient-provided health information in general [18]. We have grouped these limitations under 4 themes identified through literature reviews: accessibility, affordability, accuracy, and acceptability.…”

“…In 2019, Avery et al 34 An example of such was a study that retrospectively reviewed patient participation in submitting blood glucose parameters into the EHR portal in a large multispecialty clinic over 4 years. 35 Of nearly 37,000 patients with diabetes, only 53 patients uploaded three or more blood glucose values over any 9-month period. Of these patients, 23 were pregnant women (representing 3% of their portal users with gestational diabetes) and 30 were nonpregnant adults with diabetes (representing <1% of portal users with diabetes).…”

“…The collection of ePROs and PGHD renders better engagement in shorter more focused time periods.
