Early and recent intraluminal ultrasound devices

Abstract: The history of intraluminal echography dates back to the very beginning of diagnostic ultrasound. Over the years many fascinating ideas and applications of catheter tip or gastroscopic tube tip mounted transducers have been described. This chapter surveys these methods, subdividing them into a) measurements; b) Doppler and c) imaging. The survey ranges from early work of Cieszynski on the feasibility of echocardiography to more recent intra-arterial catheter tip Doppler with guidewire and balloon as described … Show more

“…The 0.40 difference was defined because it reflects the variation inherent to the quantitative angiography system used (CMS). Furthermore, previous studies carried out by our group showed that errors of this magnitude may have clinical implications and also that this has been the mean intraobserver variability of the tomography used 2,8,10 . P values < 0.05 were, therefore, considered statistically significant.…”

“…Early studies documented the effectiveness of noninvasive examination for evaluating CAD patients, but its performance in the presence of coronary stents is yet to be determined [8][9][10][11][12] . Recent studies using multidetector technology equipped with 40 to 64 detectors still reported limitations in the diagnosis of in-stent restenosis, the results of which varied according to the type of prosthesis studied 13,14 .…”

“…A 30-MHz mechanical IVUS imaging system was used with 4.3F catheters ("Princeps", EndoSonics). 8 The IVUS catheter was positioned distally from the stenosis in the first major side branch. Real-time cross-sectional images of the renal artery wall obtained during slow pullback of the IVUS catheter were displayed on a monitor and stored on S-VHS videotape for off-line analysis.…”

“…был разработан механиче-ский вращающийся 4-элементный ультразвуко-вой датчик, а в 1969 году N.Bom и соавт. в Рот-тердаме разработал фазированный датчик с 32 элементами [4,5,6]. Эта разработка предше-ствовала развитию методов лечения при помо-щи катетерных технологий.…”
