Early Development of the Vertebrate Inner Ear

Abstract: This is a review of the biological processes and the main signaling pathways required to generate the different otic cell types, with particular emphasis on the actions of insulin-like growth factor I. The sensory organs responsible of hearing and balance have a common embryonic origin in the otic placode. Lineages of neural, sensory, and support cells are generated from common otic neuroepithelial progenitors. The sequential generation of the cell types that will form the adult inner ear requires the coordina… Show more

“…At the cochlea, in the scala media , more than a dozen interconnected cell types are fundamental for hearing. The auditory sensory epithelium, the organ of Corti, contains two types of hair cells, outer and inner, innervated by the spiral ganglion neurons that connect it with the brain (Magariños et al, 2012, 2014). The irreversible loss of hair cells and/or neurons, or their malfunctions are the typical causes of sensorineural HL (SNHL).…”

“…The auditory and vestibular organs contain the mechanosensory receptors that transduce mechanical stimuli into electrochemical signals that are transmitted to the brain by the fibers of the VIIIth cranial nerve. The auditory receptor is the organ of Corti in the scala media of the cochlea (Magariños et al, 2012, 2014), which is formed by sensory hair cells and by non-sensory support cells (Deiters', Hensen's and Claudius') that maintain the ionic and metabolic cochlear homeostasis (Forge and Wright, 2002). There are two functional types of hair cells arranged in a stereotypic manner: one row of inner hair cells (IHC) and three rows of outer hair cells (OHC; Forge and Wright, 2002; Magariños et al, 2012).…”

“…The efferent response is also altered in the senescent gerbil, indeed vestibular and cochlear efferent neurons are differentially modified (Radtke-Schuller et al, 2015). Auditory and vestibular organs have a common developmental origin (Magariños et al, 2012) and the parallel and gradual deterioration of both is strongly associated with aging. Older human adults showing hearing loss generally have increased audiometric thresholds.…”
