Early developmental precursors of impulsive and inattentive behavior: from infancy to middle childhood

Abstract: These data provide further evidence for the multidimensional nature of child impulsivity, and they highlight the importance of examining toddler-age precursors of children's later self-regulatory competence.

“…Maternal responsiveness when children were 22 months old predicted the development of effortful control from 22-to 33-months (Kochanska et al, 2000). Conversely, negative maternal interactive style (Calkins, Smith, Gill, & Johnson, 1998) and restrictiveness (Olson et al, 2002) predicted lower selfregulation. Parenting during preschool has been shown to predict later adjustment, as well (Cole, Teti, & Zahn-Waxler, 2003).…”

“…Parenting has been shown to predict self-regulation (e.g., Kochanska, Murray, & Harlan, 2000;Olson, Bates, Sandy, & Schilling, 2002). However, little is known about broader contextual influences on self-regulation.…”

“…The mutual interplay between the child's temperament and parental control in early childhood may also serve to increase the risks of later dysfunction (Bates, Pettit, Dodge, & Ridge, 1998;Olsen et al, 2000). Callousunemotional (CU) traits evidenced in the individual with conduct problems also serve to increase the risk of maladjustment (Frick, Cornell, Barry, Bodin & Dane, 2003).…”

“…Clinically diagnosed disorders such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are known to develop in early childhood (Webster-Stratton, 1998). Conduct Disorder (CD) is often evidenced at a later stage in development, however, the onset of CD may occur in some children with research supporting the distinction between the onset of CD in childhood and its emergence in adolescence (Olson, Bates, Sandy, & Lanthier, 2000;Patterson, DeBaryshe, & Ramsey, 1989).…”

“…De acordo com o "modelo transacional", considera-se o desenvolvimento psicossocial de um indivíduo como resultado final do balanço (transação) entre os fatores de proteção e de risco presentes em diferentes esferas 8 . Os fatores protetores podem ser definidos como influências que modificam, melhoram ou alteram respostas pessoais frente a adversidades (ou os fatores de risco) que predispõe a resultado desadaptativos 9 .…”
