Early Diagnosis and Surgery is Crucial to Survival Outcome in Rhinocerebral Mucormycosis

Abstract: The article by Kolekar [1] made for an interesting read. Their observations on the outcome of rhinocerebral mucormycosis in a predominantly diabetic patient population are succinct and an important addition to the scarce literature on this subject. However we feel that some addition of the crucial clinical data would possibly throw light on the factors responsible for survival outcome of patients. It is widely recognized that a multimodal approach that involves an early diagnosis, aggressive surgical debridemen… Show more

“…Surgical tissue removal is crucial in treating mucormycosis, particularly when necrosis and thrombosis impede drug effectiveness . Aggressive debridement of affected areas, especially in rhinocerebral infections, improves survival rates, though such surgical intervention involving otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, and neurosurgery is often disfiguring. , Surgery combined with antifungal drugs show promise for rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis . However, surgical success varies, limiting its use in disseminated infections.…”

“…It is well known that the optimum management of CAM involves an early diagnosis, surgical debridement of the affected tissues, antifungal therapy, and adequate control of the predisposing illness (Yasmin et al, 2019;Dayal, 2016;Dayal and Bakshi, 2016). Diagnostic delays are expected in CAM due to the non-specificity of initial symptoms and signs (Yasmin et al, 2019).…”

“…11,12 An early diagnosis is also crucial for survival outcomes. [12][13][14] However, the diagnosis of CAM is often delayed due to its nonspecific initial symptoms and signs. 10,12 Additionally, surgical debridement is often a challenge during pandemic times.…”
