Early diagnostic evaluation of mandibular symmetry using orthopantomogram

Abstract: In mixed dentition (CS1-2), a first appraisal of mandibular symmetry may be performed on orthopantomogram utilizing this modified Habets's method. This tracing method provides an early evaluation about mandibular symmetry and is able to show slight asymmetries in mixed dentition thereby reducing the number of cone beam computed tomograms performed.

“…Only five panoramic images were evaluated per a day in order to prevent investigator fatigue. The mesiodistal widths of the mandibular first molar teeth were evaluated bilaterally to detect horizontal distortion in the images and images with greather than a size difference of 1 mm were excluded from the study (1).…”

“…A symmetric facial appearance is a major factor in determining human attractiveness; however, perfect symmetry does not exist. In cases where a distinctive diagnosis is required for dental and skeletal problems, the determination of symmetry of the maxillofacial complex is a very important and basic step (1).…”

“…5 Orthopantomogram used routinely has the maximum cost-benefit ratio due to low radiation exposure. 6 There have been studies to diagnose mandibular asymmetries 7,8 and condylar inclination 9 by OPG. However, there is no study in the literature mentioning the use of OPGs for the diagnosis of vertical malrelationships.…”

“…The existence of causal connections can stimulate skeletal and muscle development of any organ in vertebrae. Then this might be considered as a risk factor in developmental asymmetry [12]. Any dysfunction, occlusal disorder, postural abnormality or trauma upper quarter could likely lead to a problem at adjacent or related components.…”
