Early Experience With the Multilayer Aneurysm Repair Stent in the Endovascular Treatment of Trans/Infragenicular Popliteal Artery Aneurysms: A Mixed Bag

Abstract: No firm conclusion can be reached on the efficacy of the MARS in PAAs due to the inherent limitations of this small series, although a 50% thrombosis rate is a poor outcome. The risk of early thrombosis in flow-modulating stents deployed in the popliteal artery exists, as it does with earlier generation stent-grafts. Larger prospective trials and the influence of more aggressive antithrombotic/anticoagulant therapy should be considered to enable accurate evaluation of this device in popliteal artery aneurysms.

“…37 In contrast, the new concept of multilayer flow modulating stent grafts, introduced by Thakar and Chaudhuri showed poor results. 38 The researcher implanted six multilayer stent grafts in six patients with PAA. They reported a thrombosis rate of 50% after 6 weeks.…”

“…They reported a thrombosis rate of 50% after 6 weeks. 38 The advantages of EVR are low invasiveness, with the avoidance of general anesthesia; minor blood loss; and a short duration of intervention. Further major benefits of this minimally invasive procedure are a short hospitalization and short recovery times with fewer wound complications.…”

“…Fallzahlen und Single-Center-Studien zum "Flow Diverter" (Supera Stent, "Dual-Layer"-Prinzip) sind begrenzt, sodass keine validen Daten aktuell vorliegen. Es scheint jedoch, dass eine hämodynamische Modifikation in kleineren und sackförmigen Aneurysmen erreicht wird [19,56,57].…”
