“…Previous age restrictions for EI services were therefore likely gender inequitable and disproportionately disadvantaged women. In contrast to previous studies, which found O-35s to be more likely to present with affective psychosis, we did not find differences in diagnosis between the age groups (Clay et al, 2018 ; Jagger et al, 2019 ; O’Driscoll et al, 2019 ). Additionally, we did not find differences in comorbid mental health secondary diagnoses.…”

“…We found gender distribution to be uneven in the two age groups considered; further suggesting that a later psychosis onset may be more common in women (Häfner et al, 1998 ; Jagger et al, 2019 ; O’Driscoll et al, 2019 ; Selvendra et al, 2014 ). Previous age restrictions for EI services were therefore likely gender inequitable and disproportionately disadvantaged women.…”

“…In this regard, the national effort in the United Kingdom to widen inclusion in these services to age 65 may offer some useful lessons for the United States (4). Preliminary reports suggest a 25% increase in total referrals to services, with those older than 35 representing one-third of the total FEP sample (5). Of note, FEP in this specific age group results in higher care complexity, requiring more intensive care planning, as well as sustained social worker support for child care, involvement with child protective services, and consideration of economic needs (5).…”

“…Older FEP individuals have distinguishing features and characteristics (Clay et al, 2018), and thus are likely to have different needs and expectations in terms of treatment and support compared to the traditional EIS client population, such as different aims in psychological therapy or vocational objectives (Golay et al, 2017; Greenfield et al, 2018; Selvendra, Baetens, Trauer, Petrakis, & Castle, 2014). A recent study (Jagger et al, 2019) looking at treatment components utilization in an age inclusive service observed more complex and sustained needs in service users over the age of 35, especially in terms of care coordination. As a result, it has been suggested that the benefits of EIS cannot necessarily be generalized or extrapolated to older individuals (Mitford, Reay, McCabe, Paxton, & Turkington, 2010) and monitoring the change and expansion of service user focus in EIS is important.…”
