“…Finally, it is interesting to note that characteristics that we anticipated would significantly influence progression rates of FCIF such as lesion depth or diameter, or BMEP extent (which itself can suggest a diagnosis of FCIF), were not found to have a significant relationship to prognosis [35]. This could potentially have important implications for how best to interpret these imaging studies, and reinforces the concept that, in cases of FCIF, the integrity of the surrounding cartilage and intra-articular structures has greater prognostic value than characteristics such as fracture diameter and depth.…”

“…The extent of the bone marrow edema pattern does not seem to be helpful, but the presence of large (> 4 14 mm) subchondral area of low SI on PD-weighted fat-saturated or STIR images together with a subtle focal depression of the articular contour have been found to be highly specific for osteonecrosis [56]. Often, follow-up MRI performed after 3 months is helpful.…”

“…In cases of SONK with normal radiographs, we applied MR imaging criteria of irreversible SONK of Lecouvet et al [6,7] excluding those with characteristics of transient epiphyseal lesions.…”
