Early maladaptive schemas and child and adult attachment: A 15‐year longitudinal study

Abstract: The results suggest that specific elements of representational models are more likely to be related to the development of EMS: high anxiety over abandonment, negative self-view, and explicit manifestations of personal distress. Unmet childhood needs for secure attachment may lead to a large variety of EMS as defined in schema therapy.

“…Insecure attachment is a concept first articulated by John Bowlby in his development of attachment theory (Bowlby, 1988), and insecure attachment style in adults is thought to be based to a significant degree on suboptimal experiences with early caregiving (Carlson, 1998; Sroufe, 2005; Simard et al, 2011). Subcategories of insecure attachment styles vary between measurement instruments, and include divisions such as anxious versus avoidant, ambivalent versus avoidant, and preoccupied versus fearful versus dismissing (Ravitz et al, 2010).…”

“…Similarly, for adolescents and children, there have been a substantial amount of studies which have indicated a strong link between EMS and psychopathological symptoms and mental disorders (Bakshi Bojed & Nikmanesh, 2013;Calvete, 2008Calvete, , 2014Calvete, Orue, & Hankin, 2013a, 2013b, 2015Damiano, Reece, Reid, Atkins, & Patton, 2015;González-Jiménes & del Mar Hernández-Romera, 2014;Lawrence, Allen, & Chanen, 2011;Lumley & Harkness, 2007;Muris, 2006;Orue, Calvete, & Padilla, 2014;Richardson, 2005;Roelofs, Lee, Ruijten, & Lobbestael, 2011;Roelofs, Onckels, & Muris, 2013;Simard, Moss, & Pascuzzo, 2011;Van Vlierberghe & Braet, 2007;Van Vlierberghe, Braet, Bosmans, Rosseel, & Bögels, 2010). Young and Brown (1990) first proposed 16 EMS, based on clinical experiences with chronic psychotherapy patients.…”

“…This model of the Self generates a feeling of fundamental uncertainty and a permanent pursuit of confirmation from the Other. In fact, regarding the early maladaptive schemas in adults, recent studies identify considerably higher levels of dependence/incompetence in the participants with preoccupied attachment styles compared to the secure ones (Simard, Moss, & Pascuzzo, 2011). Our hypothesis was based on this key element.…”
