Early maladaptive schemas, styles of humor and aggression

Abstract: The relationship between early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) and psychopathology is thought to be mediated by the use of maladaptive compensatory coping and deficits in adaptive coping. One form of coping that might be affected by EMSs is an individual's style of humor, which can be adaptive or maladaptive. This study examined the relationships among EMS domains, styles of humor, and aggression. The EMS domain of Impaired Limits was most consistently related to aggression. Moreover, as predicted, an aggressive st… Show more

“…Previous research indicated that the use of dark types of humour may be one factor perpetuating maladaptive cognitive schemas that implicate the belief that one is superior to others and that others should be controlled and dominated 45 . These maladaptive cognitive schemas are also associated with vulnerability to development of externalising/aggressive psychopathology 46 47 48 .…”

“…In addition, one study also showed the role of education in perceived funniness: specifically, dark humor cartoons tended to be rated as funnier by participants with higher levels of educational attainment (Willinger et al, 2017). Concerning the role of personality traits, there is a vast number of studies on humor production and humor styles (e.g., Dozois et al, 2013;Papousek et al, 2017;Ruch et al, 2018). However, the specific literature focusing on the appreciation of dark humor and personality is much narrower.…”

“…Although cognitive distortions figure prominently in cognitive theory and therapy, a dearth of research has examined the mechanisms through which cognitive distortions impact subsequent psychological distress. Humor styles are potential mediators of the association between cognitive and interpersonal vulnerability factors and psychological dysfunction, distress, or poor interpersonal functioning (e.g., Cann, Norman, Welbourne, & Calhoun, 2008 ; Dozois, Martin, & Faulkner, 2013 ; Fitts, Sebby, & Zlokovich, 2009 ; Kazarian, Moghnie, & Martin, 2010 ; Kuiper & McHale, 2009 ). For example, past research has found that various humor styles mediated the relation of early maladaptive schemas (i.e., core beliefs about the self and others) and depressive symptoms ( Dozois, Martin, & Bieling, 2009 ).…”
