Early mercaptoacetyltriglycine(MAG‐3) diuretic renography results after pyeloplasty

Abstract: There is no agreement regarding the 'gold standard' investigation to use after pyeloplasty for PUJ obstruction. Improvement in hydronephrosis on US is slow and often takes > 12 months. Based on animal studies, it is possible that missed recurrent obstruction will cause irreversible loss of renal function after 6 weeks; therefore, early postoperative assessment is desirable, but there have been few reports on urinary drainage changes with early diuretic renography after pyeloplasty. Most of the renal units had … Show more

“…In most patients (83.4%), drainage improved after surgery, which was similar to the findings of a recent study. 21 It is essential to confirm the residual obstruction through timely follow up after surgery to prevent the loss of renal function. Diuretic renography is used to confirm relative renal function after pyeloplasty and to ensure proper drainage.…”

“…Also, we saw significantly improved ambulation in LP group, which led to early discharge of patients and shorter hospital stay, also confirmed by Mazhar Memon et al [9] The purpose of pyeloplasty (OP and LP) operations in UPJO is to avoid renal complications. There is a lack of consensus on the pre-eminent type of surveillance procedure timing and frequency for the postoperative monitoring of a patient [13]. The failure of laparoscopic pyeloplasty can be early or late.…”

“…Kumar M et al reports >5% improvement in low SRF (<40%) after pyeloplasty in 41–46% of patients retaining improved renal function after 5 years of follow-up [18]. Another study demonstrated significant increase in SRF in 75% of children whose SRF was impaired preoperatively, but just in early renograms (7–9 weeks postoperatively) [19]. Surgical indications still remain extremely different, varying from active surveillance and delayed pyeloplasty to early surgical management [20,21].…”
