Early neonatal deaths associated with perinatal asphyxia in infants ≥2500 g in Brazil

Abstract: Despite the decreasing rates in Brazil from 2005 to 2010, early neonatal mortality rates associated with perinatal asphyxia in infants in the better spectrum of birth weight and without congenital malformations are still high, and meconium aspiration syndrome plays a major role.

“…This is in line with the research which stated that there was a significant relationship between asphyxia and neonatal death, namely infants with asphyxia will be 7.85 times more likely to experience neonatal death compared to those without asphyxia. The value of p = 0.001 and the proportion of infants experiencing asphyxia in the case group (62.07%) was greater than the control group (17.24%) [7].…”

“…The deaths in under-five children were mostly concentrated in early infancy, and there was thus a larger reduction in survival at earlier ages. The neonatal period is the most vulnerable period for infant deaths, accounting for approximately 55% of deaths up to five years of age in Brazil in 2015 10 . This concentration in the neonatal period is expected when infant mortality decreases, as in developed countries 2 .…”

“…The third pragmatic criterion in the definition of life-threatening conditions, a five-minute Apgar score less than seven, indicative of asphyxia, relates essentially to conditions of intrapartum and neonatal care 5 . Among Brazilian neonates with low risk of death, perinatal asphyxia contributed to 40% of all neonatal deaths from 2005 to 2010 10 . In the current study, among newborns with life-threatening conditions, asphyxia and intrauterine hypoxia were the second cause (reducible by adequate neonatal care) and third cause (reducible by adequate intrapartum care) of avoidable death.…”

“…La asfixia perinatal constituye una de las principales causas de mortalidad en niños menores de cinco años de edad (1,2). Se estima que por cada paciente que fallece por asfixia perinatal hay 10 sobrevivientes con secuelas graves (3).…”
