Early osteological development of the fins in the hatchery-reared red porgy,Pagrus pagrus(L. 1758)

Abstract: SummaryThe present study was undertaken to establish the normal, healthy features of morphological structures at various developmental stages as achieved under well-defined environmental culture conditions (temperature between 16 and 21°C, salinity 36 ppt, pH around 7.6, and oxygen saturation over 95%) common in aquaculture of the species. The pectoral fin supports began to develop at 2.90 mm total length (TL), followed by those of dorsal fins at 5.5 mm TL, caudal fins at 5.6 mm TL, pelvic fins at 5.9 mm TL an… Show more

“…Specific growth rate (SGR) was calculated by the formula SGR = 100 (Ln FBW−Ln IBW)/Δt, with IBW, FBW: initial, final body weight of fish (mg), Δt: time interval (day). Larval stages were classified according to flexional ontogeny of the notochord (Russo et al, 2007;Çoban et al, 2009). At the end of the experiment, larval survival was determined by recording of daily mortality and counting of larvae remaining in the experimental tanks.…”

“…To this date, although larval phase was evaluated until juvenile stage (2,3,9,10), recent studies were focused on skeletogenesis mainly depend on bone and cartilage developmental stages with notochordal ontogeny (11,12). However, it is well recorded that factors effecting skeletal development in larval fish are malnutrition and/or sudden changes in biotical and abiotical factors under culture conditions (8,11,12).…”
