Early Predictors of ASD in Young Children Using a Nationally Representative Data Set

Abstract: Current clinical diagnosis of autism Spectrum Disorders (aSD) occurs between 3 and 4 years of age, but increasing evidence indicates that intervention begun earlier may improve outcomes. Using secondary analysis of the early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort data set, the current study identifies early predictors prior to the diagnosis of aSD at 4 years for approximately 100 children. Children with aSD were compared with children with other disabilities and children who were typically developing. Multi… Show more

“…Given that communication deficits commonly exhibited by children with ASD may contribute to maternal depression [30], it is not surprising that when fathers engage early on in parenting activities that are directly related to children’s communication skills (e.g., singing songs or reading a story to the child), they may be playing an important role in addressing and or potentially minimizing communication problems that contribute to maternal depressive symptoms. Recent studies indicated that children later diagnosed with ASD exhibited communication difficulties within the first year of life [28, 31]. Thus fathers may have engaged in early literacy involvement in response to these difficulties.…”

“…El número de palabras que el niño expresa a los 24 meses es una variable muy importante para el diagnóstico de los TEA, demostró Jeans en 2014 quien estableció que un punto de corte de ≤25 palabras a los dos años de edad diferenció correctamente el autismo del trastorno de Asperger. 31 Este criterio es inferior al propuesto por nosotros de ≤50 palabras a los dos años de edad y debería tomarse en cuenta en estudios futuros.…”

“…In fact, the investigations of the development of mentalist skills (directly related to the metacognitive skills of planning and assessment) in subjects with disabilities carried out by Rivière, García-Nogales and Nuñez [ 24 ] pointed out that a deficit in the acquisition of these skills was also detected in generalized developmental disorders such as maturation delay, language delay, especially of comprehensive language, and cognitive retardation [ 7 ]. Also, recent research has found differences in the self-regulation behaviors of children with various disabilities [ 25 ].…”
