Early Proterozoic U-Pb Zircon Ages from Basement Gneiss at the Solovetsky Archipelago, White Sea, Russia

Abstract: The central region of the Neoarchaean Belomorian Mobile Belt (BMB) is, except for the Solovetsky Archipelago, largely covered by the White Sea. A newly discovered granitic gneiss outcrop on Solovetsky Island, Russia, enables a first age determination of the archipelago and evaluation of the hitherto poorly constrained central BMB. Zircons separated from the orthogneiss were analysed with SIMS-SHRIMP and LA-ICP-MS techniques. Both techniques yield a concordant U-Pb age of ca. 2.430 Ga, coinciding with ages of g… Show more

“…The analyses of U-Pb isotope ratios in zircon were carried out on a SHRIMP-II secondary-ion mass spectrometer at CIR VSEGEI using the method outlined in [32,33]. The intensity of the primary molecular oxygen beam was 4 nA; the size of the sampling crater was 20 × 25 μm with a depth of 2 μm.…”

“…The points for analysis were chosen within the grains based on their cathodoluminescence (CL) and optical images. Isotope measurements and processing of digital data were made, following the techniques accepted at the Center of Isotopic Research of the Russian Geological Research Institute (Schuth et al, 2012). The contents of impurity elements in zircons were measured by LA-ICP-MS on an Element (Thermo Finnigan Mat) mass spectrometer with a UP-213 Nd:YAG (New Wave Research) laser ablation system at the Analytical Center of the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, Novosibirsk.…”

“…The U-Pb dating of zircon was carried out on a SHRIMP II ion microprobe by the standard technique (Schuth et al, 2012;Williams, 1998) at the Center of Isotopic Research, VSEGEI (St. Petersburg). Spots for the dating were selected with the use of optical (in transmitted and reflected light) and cathodoluminescence (CL) images showing the internal structure and zoning of zircon.…”
