Early results with the Mutaf technique: a novel off-midline approach in pilonidal sinus surgery

Abstract: PurposeThe objective of the present study was to compare different off-midline techniques in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.MethodsA total of 81 patients were included in this prospective, controlled, randomized study. Patients in group 1 were treated with the Limberg flap, and patients in group 2 were treated with Mutaf technique. Patients were followed up for 9 months postsurgically and assessed at regular intervals.ResultsA total of 41 and 40 patients received surgical treatment with Limberg or… Show more

“…Data on recurrence and follow-up times pertaining to 2,380 patients treated for PSD by Limberg and Dufourmentel flap techniques were extracted from 36 RCTs 5 , 14 , 21 , 23 , 43 , 44 , 46 , 49 , 53 , 54 , 56 , 61 , 64 , 65 , 73 , 77 , 78 , 80 , 82 , 83 , 90 , 93 102 , 236 , 392 , 393 , 442 , 443 . Among these patients, a recurrence of 0.6% (95% CI 0.3–0.9%) was observed in patients at 12 months and 1.8% (95% CI 1.1–2.4%) at 24 months.…”

“…Studies using the Limberg flap technique report recurrence rates of about from 0% to 5%, however these studies differ substantially in the amount of follow-up time [ 13 ]. In the study of Zorlu et al [ 19 ], there was only one recurrence among 40 patients (2.4%) with Limberg flap at the sixth month control. In our study, the recurrence rate with Limberg flap technique was 5.7% at the end of follow-up (mean, 32 months).…”

“…Commonly used flaps are Karydakis, Limberg, elliptical rotation and Mutaf. [10][11][12][13][14][15] SPD with damaged skin structure is a rare condition, we saw an incidence of 5.3% (33/623 patients) in 24 months and commonly used flaps were inapplicable for these patients. Inadequate size of the flap, or unnecessary excision of healthy tissue due to the limits of width/height ratio restricts the use of these flaps.…”

“…Commonly used flaps like Karydakis, Limberg, Mutaf, elliptical rotation, V-Y advancement were considered for relatively small defects. [10][11][12][13][14][15] SPD with damaged skin structure can be defined as the formation of granulation tissue with or without ulceration between pits. Damaged skin structure between pits may result with the requirement of large flaps for advanced SPD.…”
