Early ultraviolet emission in the Type Ia supernova LSQ12gdj: No evidence for ongoing shock interaction

Abstract: We present photospheric-phase observations of LSQ12gdj, a slowly-declining, UV-bright Type Ia supernova. Classified well before maximum light, LSQ12gdj has extinction-corrected absolute magnitude M B = −19.8, and pre-maximum spectroscopic evolution similar to SN 1991T and the super-Chandrasekhar-mass SN 2007if. We use ultraviolet photometry from Swift, ground-based optical photometry, and corrections from a near-infrared photometric template to construct the bolometric (1600-23800 Å) light curve out to 45 days… Show more

“…Of the five SNe Ia that are clearly blue in the top panel, SNe 2011fe and 2011ia are anomalously bright in the uvw1 filter, although not as bright as Super-Chandrasekhar candidates (Brown et al 2014a;Scalzo et al 2014), SN2004dt (Wang et al 2012), or SN2011de (Brown 2014. SN2008hv is intermediate.…”

“…For each target, given a suite of light curves with quasisimultaneous measurements in a range of bands, we build the bolometric light curve by the procedure used in Scalzo et al (2014b). We briefly summarize the process here.…”

“…Such explosions are often linked to 'tamped detonations', studied extensively by Khokhlov et al (1993); Hoeflich & Khokhlov (1996), and have been suggested as models for Super-Chandrasekhar SNe Ia (e.g. Scalzo et al 2014;Raskin et al 2014).…”
