Early weaning in Northern Great Plains beef cattle production systems: II. Development of replacement heifers weaned at 80 or 215d of age

Abstract: a b s t r a c tStudies were conducted to evaluate effects of weaning and subsequent heifer development treatments within two herds located in the Northern Great Plains, USA. Heifer calves from predominantly Angus  Hereford dams were stratified within dam age and calving date (Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory (LARRL), Miles City, MT, USA; n¼328) and randomly assigned within study and strata to one of three weaning treatments. Heifer calves from Angus and Angus  Simmental dams (n¼167; Judith … Show more

“…Additionally, steers receiving a lesser amount of RDP but the same amount of dietary crude protein should improve or accelerate lean tissue growth. This research supports previous finding on the performance of early weaning on cow production (Waterman et al, 2012a) and heifer development (Waterman et al, 2012b) in the Northern Great Plains, USA. After normal weaning, steers were relocated to a commercial feed yard or sent to the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL, USA, research facility and finished prior to harvesting.…”

“…A complete description of the materials and methods used were reported by [11][12][13]. Crossbred cows (predominantly Angus × Hereford) were stratified within cow age by calf sex and age, and then randomly assigned within strata to one of two weaning treatments at the start of breeding.…”

“…The economic analyses of weaning performance of the two calf weaning strategies were conducted using the data and results from [11][12][13]. In addition, the economic analysis evaluated performance based on market prices and weaning weights.…”
