Earth Observation for Citizen Science Validation, or, Citizen Science for Earth Observation Validation? The Role of Quality Assurance of Volunteered Observations

Abstract: 27Based on an invasive species CS study, concerning Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed), the paper 28 discusses the flexibility and usefulness of qualifying CS data, either when using an EO data for the 29 validation within the quality assurance process, or validating an EO data product that describes the 30 risk of occurrence of the plant. Both validation paths are found to be improved by quality assurance 31 of the CS data. Addressing the reliability of CS open data, issues and limitations of the role of q… Show more

“…Proper training, data-collection protocols and standardizations can help to generate high-quality, reliable data for formal analysis and integration, even for data from non-traditional sources. Moreover, citizen science data and geospatial data can be used for cross-validating each other, which has already been demonstrated by Leibovici et al (2017) to be useful through an automated quality-assurance workflow.…”

“…A considerable body of literature has discussed data quality issues associated with VGI data, along with their spatial and a-spatial characteristics [4,5]. Specificities of quality assurance (QA) when collecting crowdsourced or citizen science data [6][7][8][9][10] are contributing to better designs on how to qualify data as a single observation or as part of a dataset. Quality assurance (QA) is defined as a set of data policy, controls and tests put in place in order to be able to meet specific requirements.…”
