Earthquake hazard assessment uncertainty reduced by fragile geologic features in coastal Central California

Abstract: <p>Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) models typically provide estimates of ground motions for return periods that exceed historical observations. It is therefore important to develop quantitative methods to evaluate and refine ground motion estimates for long return periods, especially in proximity to major earthquake sources where estimates can be very high. Here we provide empirical constraints over 10,000s years on ground motions from onshore and offshore seismic sources in central … Show more

“…Cosmogenic exposure age dating methods have also been applied to constrain the fragility age of seven PBRs at the Double Rock site, situated in a high seismicity, plate boundary setting in coastal central California (Caklais et al, 2020;Caklais et al in press;Fig. 2).…”

“…Here, modest uplift rates preserve ancient coastal landforms as FGFs, and these have formed by weathering and removal of blocks formed along the fractures and steeply-dipping bedding planes of chert paleo-sea stacks. Cosmogenic exposure ages of rock surfaces on all sides of the FGFs exposed by block removal have yielded fragility ages in the tens of thousands of years (Caklais et al, 2020).…”
