Ebv and HHV-6 Circulating Subtypes in People Living With Hiv in Burkina Faso, Impact on Cd4 T Cell Count and Hiv Viral Load

Abstract: Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) and Human Herpes Virus 6 (HHV-6) are responsible for severe diseases, particularly in immunocompromised persons. There is limited data of the infection of these opportunistic viruses in Burkina Faso. The purpose of this study was to characterize EBV and HHV-6 subtypes and to assess their impact on CD4 T cell count, HIV-1 viral load and antiretroviral treatment in people living with HIV-1. The study population consisted of 238 HIV-positive patients with information on the CD4 T cell coun… Show more

“…We also show that the risk of HIV/EBV-1/2 multiple infection was higher in patients with longer HIV-1 infection, which emphasizes our warning because coinfections are common in patients who start treatment late, have the highest associated risk rate, and are also correlated with advanced clinical disease stages 117 , 118 . For EBV, this becomes more specific because the prevalence of EBV-1 and of multiple infection predominate in the most immunosuppressed patients; however, it is not known which factors may be involved in this scenario 44 , 119 .…”

“…HIV-positive patients on a highly active antiretroviral treatment would not act on a herpes virus infection but could prevent the reactivation of these viruses. 21 In an EBV infection, HAART treatment to improve CD4+ T cell restoration while contributing to lower HIV viral load does not affect. 22 A herpesvirus infection is more likely to be found in HAART patients with high CD4 T cell counts.…”
