EBV Infection and Glucose Metabolism in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Abstract: To establish persistent infection in cells, viruses evolve strategies to alter host cellular pathways to regulate cell proliferation and energy metabolism which support viral infection. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) undergoes both lytic and latent infection to achieve persistent and lifelong infection in human. EBV readily infects human B cells, driving their transformation to proliferative lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCL), and eventually establishes lifelong latent infection in memory B cells. In contrary, EBV unde… Show more

“…It has been shown that the initiation and progress of NPC is closely associated with the status of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection ( 67 ). Some EBV gene products are involved in tumor progression and play a vital part in epithelial-mesenchymal transition, angiogenesis and metastasis in NPC ( 67 , 68 ). The APOL1 gene may have a limited contribution to the initiation and progress of NPC.…”

“…Most of the nasopharyngeal carcinoma is low or undifferentiated squamous carcinoma, which is characterized by high malignancy, rapid growth, and distant metastasis [12]. Epidemiology studies revealed that the occurrence of NPC is closely related to EBV infection [13]. Some studies reported that TRAF2 was involved in EBV-associated nasopharyngeal carcinoma development.…”

“…Discussion NPC is a common malignant tumor in South China and Southeast Asia (16). The specific etiology of NPC is still unclear, however, it has been reported that NPC is related to EBV virus infection, and methylation of the parkin gene may also promote tumors of NPC (17,18). Although NPC patients are sensitive to radiotherapy, the prognosis of NPC patients is still poor due to recurrence and distant metastasis (19).…”
