ECG Changes during Treatment with Nortriptyline in a Once-a-Day Dosage

Abstract: In 21 patients suffering from endogenous depression and given nortriptyline 150 mg/day for 4 weeks in a once-a-day dosage an electrocardiographic study was made with ECG recordings at different times during the treatment. At the same time the plasma concentration of nortriptyline was determined. During the treatment the heart rate increased significantly, both at the minimum and the maximum concentration of nortriptyline. At the maximum concentration the PQ interval increased significantly. None of the patient… Show more

“…Nomifensine was introduced as a clinically effective antidepressant drug with fewer anticholinergic or cardiovascular side effects than the tri cyclic antidepressants [Nicholson and Turner, 1977;Nielsen, 1980;Vohra et al, 1978], Whether there is a real difference in the overall incidence of side effects with nomifensine or the tricyclic antidepressants has recently been debated. The most commonly reported side effects in large numbers of out patients have been sleep disturbances, restlessness, paranoid symptoms, nausea and tachycardia [Brogden et al, 1979].…”
