“…Social desirability bias is the propensity of respondents to give interviewers the answer that is closest to what they consider to be the majority social norm. Attitudes that are socially repressed by a part of the population, such as minority sexual identifications (Bajos and Beltzer, 2008) and sensitive events such as sexual or intimate partner violence (Bajos and Bozon, 2008; Equipe ENVEFF, 2003), are more likely to be reported through self-administered data collection, in particular via the Internet (Burkill et al, 2016; Frippiat and Marquis, 2010; Kreuter et al, 2008; Velter et al, 2015). In the case of VIRAGE LGBT, however, it may be wondered whether the desirability bias is significant, given that the collection strategy implies a certain visibility on the part of the respondents; and also whether desirability affects the reporting of sexual identification and of violence in the same way.…”

“…It can be assumed that a certain number of these respondents turned to these organizations after experiences of violence, or in search of information on the topic. In addition, because it was based on recruiting respondents from LGB spaces, the VIRAGE LGBT sample no doubt consists of people who are more visible as homo-/bisexuals (Schiltz, 2005; Velter et al, 2015) and who are thus more likely to experience violence for this reason (Kuyper et al, 2016).…”
