The phyletic relationships both between and within many of tardigrade genera have been barely studied and they remain obscure. Amongst them is the cosmopolitan Bryodelphax, one of the smallest in terms of body size echiniscid genera. The analysis of newly-found populations and species from the Mediterranean region and from South-East Asia gave us an opportunity to present the first phylogeny of this genus, which showed that phenotypic traits used in classical Bryodelphax taxonomy do not correlate with their phyletic relationships. In contrast, geographic distribution of the analysed species suggests their limited dispersal abilities and seems to be a reliable predictor of phylogenetic affinities within the genus. Moreover, we describe three new species of the genus. Bryodelphax australasiaticussp. nov., by having the ventral plate configuration VII:4-4-2-4-2-2-1, is a new member of the weglarskae group with a wide geographic range extending from the Malay Peninsula through the Malay Archipelago to Australia. Bryodelphax decoratussp. nov. from Central Sulawesi (Celebes) also belongs to the weglarskae group (poorly visible ventral plates VII:4-2-2-4-2-2-1) and is closely related to the recently described Bryodelphax arenosus Gąsiorek, 2018, but is differentiated from the latter by well-developed epicuticular granules on the dorsum. Finally, a new dioecious species, Bryodelphax nigripunctatussp. nov., is described from Mallorca and, by the reduced ventral armature (II/III:2-2-(1)), it resembles Bryodelphax maculatus Gąsiorek et al., 2017. The latter species, known so far only from northern Africa, is recorded from Europe for the first time. A taxonomic key to the genus members is also presented.

setaceus sp. nov., E. similaris sp. nov., E. tetraspinosus sp. nov., Hypechiniscus africanus sp. nov. (the exarmatus group), Pseudechiniscus (Pseudechiniscus) aquatilis sp. nov., P. (P.) linnaei sp. nov., and P. (Meridioniscus) wallacei sp. nov. Moreover, E. longispinosus Murray, 1907 and E. perarmatus Murray, 1907 are formally re-described and their neotypes are established. Amendments to outdated descriptions of E. africanus Murray, 1907 and E. crassispinosus Murray, 1907 are also provided. Species descriptions and redescriptions contain detailed data on ecological preferences of species, their ontogenetic variability, sex ratios in gonochoristic/dioecious populations (males are recorded in African Echiniscus spp. for the first time), and, finally, on their phylogenetic relationships. The study reveals a diverse echiniscid assemblage, dominated by Echiniscus, that overlaps with the hotspots of Cape Floristic Region, Succulent Karoo, and Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany. According to our phylogenetic analyses, the great majority of South African Echiniscus species are endemics and they evolved from several species that colonised the region after the genus had originated (in contrast to earlier hypotheses, our work suggests that Echiniscus has the Laurasian rather than the Gondwanan origin). The remaining echiniscids found in South Africa represent pantropical or cosmopolitan species.

The new species Minibiotus pentannulatus sp. nov., is described from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. It differs from the other species of the genus by star-shaped pores, the presence of a peculiar egg with a smooth shell, and small conical processes with 5 annulations. Other differences include the distribution and size of the pores, and other morphometric details regarding the size of the body and buccal tube, and the pt of the stylet support insertion point, macroplacoids and claws. To date, the genus Minibiotus R.O. Schuster, 1980, comprises 48 species, including the species described here.
