Echo Doppler evaluation of right ventricular dysplasia

Abstract: Two-dimensional echocardiography (2D echo) and Doppler were performed in a group of patients who had a high probability of having right ventricular (RV) dysplasia (left bundle branch block arrhythmias, no signs of cardiopulmonary diseases) and in a group of age-matched normals. 2D echo showed RV morphofunctional abnormalities (free wall and apical irregularities, wall motion abnormalities) in 25% of patients with suspected RV dysplasia but in none of the normals. Concordance with angiography was good (75% of c… Show more

“…The patient group had a significantly decreased E:A ratio compared with the normal subjects, and this could not be explained by differences in heart rate. Abnormal tricuspid inflow has been reported in one previous study of ARVC patients but results were only reported from six patients 27. Two of our patients showed a severely abnormal superior vena caval inflow pattern, with a peak systolic to diastolic ratio of < 1 indicating decreased ventricular compliance 28.…”

“…Abnormal tricuspid inflow has been reported in one previous study of ARVC patients but results were only reported from six patients. 27 Two of our patients showed a severely abnormal superior vena caval inflow pattern, with a peak systolic to diastolic ratio of < 1 indicating decreased ventricular compliance. 28 Both patients had a tricuspid flow with an E:A ratio of > 1.5 suggesting pseudonormalisation, and the tissue Doppler recording from the lateral tricuspid annulus showed a low late diastolic peak velocity suggesting atrial dysfunction or a greatly increased filling pressure.…”
