Organic solar cells (OSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for renewable energy harvesting due to their lightweight, flexible, and low‐cost fabrication potential. The efficiency of OSCs is largely determined by the choice of solvents, which significantly affect the film morphology of the active layers, the intermixed donor‐acceptor domains, and overall device performance. Beginning with an introduction to the importance of solvent selection, the screening and classification of solvents, emphasizing their characteristics and classification based on sustainability, solubility, and other additional considerations are explored. Various non‐halogenated solvents, highlighting commonly used aromatic solvents, biomass‐derived solvents, and water/alcohol‐based solvents are explored. The state‐of‐the‐art donor and acceptor materials, focusing on efficient donor materials such as PM6 and D18, and high‐performing Y‐series acceptors are also presented. Strategies for developing high‐performance OSCs processed using non‐halogenated solvents are examined, including solvent engineering with additive and additive‐free approaches, ternary strategies, and layer‐by‐layer techniques. The fabrication of large‐area devices using non‐halogenated solvents is addressed, focusing on blade‐coating, slot‐coating, and other processing techniques. Finally, this review outlines future research directions in the non‐halogenated solvent processing of OSCs, emphasizing the need for continuous innovation to overcome existing limitations and propel OSC technology toward commercial viability.

Large‐area organic photovoltaic modules have a wide range of applications in a number of fields due to their unique advantages. Inverted organic solar cells exhibit better air stability and are suitable for all‐air printing of large‐area modules. However, the mismatch between the surface energy of ZnO and the active layer leads to coffee rings and stick‐slip effects during the printing process, resulting in uneven deposition of the active layer. Additionally, the mismatch in energy levels between the active layer and ZnO degrades device performance. Hence, a phenol series of alcohol solutions is utilized to improve the wettability and surface energy of ZnO, enabling the formation of large‐area homogeneous active layer films. Hydroxyl groups in the phenol series passivate ZnO surface defects and form hydrogen bonds with small molecules of the acceptor, increasing carrier mobility and improving device performances. Based on the PM6: BTP‐eC9 (o‐XY) system, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) reaches 18.80% for small‐area devices and 15.87% for large‐area modules, higher than the forward structure (15.83%). This study offers an effective approach to mitigating large‐area active layer film uniformity issues, advancing the preparation of large‐area organic photovoltaic modules via all‐air printing.

Asymmetrified Benzothiadiazole‐Based Solid Additives Enable All‐Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency Over 19 %

Disordered polymer chain entanglements within all‐polymer blends limit the formation of optimal donor‐acceptor phase separation. Therefore, developing effective methods to regulate morphology evolution is crucial for achieving optimal morphological features in all‐polymer organic solar cells (APSCs). In this study, two isomers, 4,5‐difluorobenzo‐c‐1,2,5‐thiadiazole (SF‐1) and 5,6‐difluorobenzo‐c‐1,2,5‐thiadiazole (SF‐2), were designed as solid additives based on the widely‐used electron‐deficient benzothiadiazole unit in nonfullerene acceptors. The incorporation of SF‐1 or SF‐2 into PM6 : PY‐DT blend induces stronger molecular packing via molecular interaction, leading to the formation of continuous interpenetrated networks with suitable phase‐separation and vertical distribution. Furthermore, after treatment with SF‐1 and SF‐2, the exciton diffusion lengths for PY‐DT films are extended to over 40 nm, favoring exciton diffusion and charge transport. The asymmetrical SF‐2, characterized by an enhanced dipole moment, increases the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6 : PY‐DT‐based device to 18.83 % due to stronger electrostatic interactions. Moreover, a ternary device strategy boosts the PCE of SF‐2‐treated APSC to over 19 %. This work not only demonstrates one of the best performances of APSCs but also offers an effective approach to manipulate the morphology of all‐polymer blends using rational‐designed solid additives.
