Eco-Labels: Modeling the Consumer Side

Abstract: The theoretical literature analyzing eco-label programs has focused mainly on how intricate interactions between firms, eco-label certifiers, and regulators shape these programs’ economic and environmental outcomes. Far less attention has been paid to the consumer side, which has typically been modeled very simply. Meanwhile, empirical researchers in behavioral economics, social psychology, and market research have accumulated a large body of empirical evidence that paints a rich, complex picture of that consu… Show more

“…We can refine the shape of the utility function by considering various important points in sustainable consumption like "warm-glow" effect, "cold prickle" effect or social norm (Andreoni, 1990(Andreoni, , 1995Grolleau et al, 2012). Different refinements of utility functions are elaborated in Van't Veld (2020) depending on the consumer attitude one wishes to consider. Also, we suggest to decisionmaker the use of eco-label to promote some product, but label are not perfect.…”

“…This line of inquiry also adds a wrinkle to the analysis vis-à-vis welfare measures. In settings with both public and private provision, where the later is driven by warm glow, one must contend with an additional set of questions related to non-neutrality between the mechanisms of provision and whether warm-glow benefits should be included in welfare calculations (Chilton and Hutchinson 1999;van 't Veld 2020).…”

“…Research shows that consumers are willing to pay a premium for eco-labeled products, though sometimes the premium is small (Loureiro et al, 2002;Sörqvist et al, 2016;van't Veld, 2020). In addition, more environmentally conscious consumers have higher WTP for eco-labeled products (Loureiro et al, 2002;Vitale et al, 2020).…”
