Ecohydrological effects of stream–aquifer water interaction: a case study of the Heihe River basin, northwestern China

Abstract: Abstract. A scheme describing the process of streamaquifer interaction was combined with the land model CLM4.5 to investigate the effects of stream water conveyance over riparian banks on ecological and hydrological processes. Two groups of simulations for five typical river cross sections in the middle reaches of the arid-zone Heihe River basin were conducted. The comparisons between the simulated results and the measurements from water wells, the FLUXNET station, and remote sensing data showed good performan… Show more

“…Therefore, the proper description of surface-groundwater water interaction in CLM4.5 will be the priority work in the future. Recently, Zeng et al [2016] conducted a 60 m simulation with CLM4.5 over five cross sections of Heihe River and studied the eco-hydrological effects of stream-aquifer interaction. Maybe we can learn some knowledge from its extremely high pixel simulation and parameterize it with CLM4.5 for basinscale modeling.…”

“…For recycled water, on the one hand, it is good for environmental protection to decrease waste water discharge. On the other hand, recycled water as a new technology will undoubtedly have potential risks for users for various reasons [15][16][17][18]. Therefore, recycled water use is an action that is good for society but harmful to oneself.…”

“…Since the implementation of ecological restoration, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the downstream Heihe River basin has significantly increased and the temporal variation in environmental factors, especially water availability (e.g. runoff and groundwater) has been reported as the major driving factor of vegetation recovery Zeng et al, 2016). While large-scale remote sensing data (e.g.…”

“…Every year, approximately 300 billion m 3 of water is delivered using concrete channels, which were built perpendicular to the river to expand the range of the river impact and to deliver water for irrigation. The influence of ecological water conveyance may reach as far as 2000 m from the river (Si et al, 2005;Zeng et al, 2016). While most of vegetation in the downstream Heihe River has been restored (Lü et al, 2015), nearly 20 % of its oasis area covered by desert riparian forests remains degraded despite better downstream water conditions and the rising of groundwater table (Y. .…”
