Abstract: Prokaryote evolution is driven in large part by the incessant arms race with viruses. Genomic investments in antivirus defense can be coarsely classified into two categories, immune systems that abrogate virus reproduction resulting in clearance, and altruistic programmed cell death (PCD) systems.
