Ecological Momentary Assessment in Physical Activity Research

Abstract: Theories explaining why individuals participate in physical activity often do not take into account within-person variation or dynamic patterns of change. Time-intensive methods such as Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) are more conductive to capturing time- and spatially-varying explanatory factors, and intraindividual fluctuations than traditional methods; and thus may yield new insights into the prediction and modeling of physical activity behavior.

“…To substantiate a reciprocal causal hypothesis, additional studies with different methods are needed. For example, Dunton 34 suggests to apply computational strategies such as dynamical systems modeling (DSM) for time‐varying relations such as between mood and physcial behavior. Another promising approach may be to use ecological momentary interventions (EMI) or just‐in‐time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) to experimentally induce particular mood states in everyday life 35 .…”

“…Ambulatory momentary assessment procedures, often aided by electronic diaries, physiological sensors, or the collection of biological samples (eg, saliva or hair), become more and more common in research investigating acute and chronic stress, related complaints, and preventive strategies reducing the negative consequences. 16 While we have no knowledge about this kind of study in elite ballroom dancers, some longitudinal evidence for the negative health outcomes of a competition season exists in other sports. These studies provided evidence for the physical consequences of heightened stress levels throughout a season, that is, an increased risk of injury or self-reported illness occurrence and health.…”

“…Besides cross‐sectional observational and experimental studies with their high internal validity and first insight into underlying mechanisms, longitudinal approaches and a higher degree of ecologic validity are needed to get insights into important aspects of stress functioning within individual elite athletes. “…Whether such a mechanism can influence energy balance, body composition, glucose control and insulin sensitivity over weeks or months remains to be determined. Improvements in food tracking technology and use of new methods such as ecological momentary assessment (Dunton, ) could allow further insight into such mechanisms influencing glycaemic control in response to brief vigorous exercise.…”
