Economic benefit of a centralized reconstitution unit of cytotoxic drugs in isolator

Abstract: Introduction. A cytotoxic drug reconstitution sys tem generates a saving in drugs due to a reduction in drug wastage by reusing partly used vials. We con ducted a study at a 1900-bed Hospital Medical Center and we compared, from January to June 1995, cyto toxic drug cost reduction due to a centralized system with data obtained by handling preparation in an uncon trolled environment. Method. Partially used vials were reused based on our stability and sterility procedures. For the reconstitution in the centrali… Show more

“…In a hospital, the Chemotherapy Preparation Unit (CPU) aims at ensuring the safety of the preparation of injectable antineoplastic drugs under the supervision of a pharmacist. This centralized service can implement the systematic pharmaceutical analysis of injectable antineoplastic prescriptions to detect Drug Related Problems (DRPs), and to carry out Pharmacist Interventions (PIs) in collaboration with prescribers [3,4]. A DRP is defined as an event or circumstance involving drug therapy that actually or potentially interferes with desired health outcomes [5].…”

“…The centralisation of CDR service has been proven to reduce the cytotoxic drug wastage by enabling vial-sharing practice where the same cytotoxic drug prescribed at the same time for different patients could be reconstituted together as well as pooling required human resources in CDR services to increase the efficiency of cytotoxic drug preparation. [22][23][24][25] Moreover, the Oncology Pharmacy is also extending the shelf life of single-use vial beyond manufacturer recommendation by using the stability data provided by reference books 26 in order to reduce the cytotoxic drug expenses. 27 The cost-saving effect of these strategies has already been studied by several studies.…”

“…По това време препоръки и контролни действия относно оборудването и защитните мерки за работещите с канцерогенни вещества почти не съществуват. (8). Подготовката и прилагането на цитотоксичните лекарства е било почти напълно извършвано в нормалните работни зони в болницата, като сестринската стая или кабинета за прегледи (9).…”
