Economic burden of stroke: a systematic review on post-stroke care

Abstract: The highest PSC costs were observed in the USA, with rehabilitation services being the main cost driver. Due to diversity in reporting, it was not possible to conduct a detailed cost analysis addressing different segments of services. Further approaches should benefit from the advantages of administrative and claims data, focusing on inpatient/outpatient PSC cost and its predictors, assuring appropriate resource allocation.

“…Stroke is the third most common cause of disability globally, with incidence remaining high in New Zealand (Valery, Bo, & George, 2017). Stroke has an impact on an individual's ability to carry out activities of daily living and participate in life roles, and this places a burden on health and social care (Rajsic et al, 2019). Self-management is a concept that has received increased attention in stroke rehabilitation, encouraging individuals to take charge of and become independent in managing their lives following stroke (Jones, Riazi, & Norris, 2013).…”

“…Stroke was the second most frequent cause of death and the third most frequent cause of disability worldwide. In a recent systematic review, post‐stroke care costs per patient month were estimated to range from $752 in Australia to $4850 in the USA, underlining the substantial overall economic burden associated with this neurological condition . Altogether, these findings clearly demonstrate the importance of better stroke prevention in the future.…”

“…Results from the 2015 iteration of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) showed that although the age-standardised death rates and prevalence of stroke have decreased over time, the overall burden of stroke has remained high. The results provided here are the most up-to-date estimates of death, prevalence, incidence, and disability for overall stroke and the pathological types of ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke [14,15].…”
