As a convenient means of transportation, high-speed rail (HSR) plays an important role in green development. In the context of the rapid development of China’s HSR, this study selects the SBM-DDF-SML model to construct the green total factor productivity (GTFP) index to measure urban green development; moreover, it empirically tests the impact of the opening of the HSR on GTFP using the spatial difference-in-differences (SDID) model. The results show that the opening of the HSR could significantly promote GTFP for HSR-served cities. In addition, the opening of HSR has a positive effect on the GTFP for neighboring HSR-served cities but a negative impact on that for neighboring non-HSR-served cities. The mechanism test shows that HSR can influence GTFP by promoting urban green innovation and entrepreneurial vitality. This study is a supplement to the research on the impact of HSR on the GTFP, in order to provide corresponding policy advice. The government should optimize the layout of HSR and help cities achieve green and sustainable development.

Following a Chinese saying: To be rich, roads first, high-speed rail (HSR) opening and station construction are indispensable for economic developing. Probing the nexus between HSR, as a vital part of modern transportation system, and local tourism development provides a scan for reviving tourism and gaining low-carbon transition after COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on prefecture-level panel data, this study takes difference-in-difference and instrument variable methods to detect the overall and heterogeneous effects of HSR connection on cities’ tourism development. The results showed that HSR connection had an overall positive effect on cities’ domestic tourist arrivals. The heterogeneity of the effect from HSR to tourism development appears to be that central and western cities, non-resource-based cities, and small cities benefited more from the opening of HSR. From a dynamic perspective, HSR connection promoted local tourism development in the 0 and 1 year of HSR opening but failed to show a positive effect in the long term. Hence, the study proposed some adjustments for evaluating the efficiency of HSR with consideration for the tourism effect, redesigning the system of HSR with consideration for local heterogeneity, and optimizing the HSR environment. These measures can optimize China’s HSR management and the design of HSR systems.

Transport enables trade between people, which is essential for the development of civilizations. Transport is a crucial necessity for specialization, allowing production and consumption of products to occur at different locations. High-speed rail (HSR) allows the flow of people between regions, cities, countries. With rapid global development in HSR technology for passenger transportation, it plays a vital role in transportation systems. The improvement of the quality of cities with different emphasis will bring different economic development results. Therefore, exploring the impact of high-speed railways and quality of place on economic development is necessary. This paper takes the prefecture-level city with a high-speed railway opened in 2008–2013 as the research sample and takes other prefecture-level cities in the country as the control group. The study findings revealed that employment, investment in fixed assets, average wage, and higher education institute significantly affect China’s regional economic growth. Institute of higher education reflects the negative effect on the regional economic growth whereas the employment, investment in fixed assets, and average wage rate positively impact it. Based on the results, it can be concluded that China’s regional economy is significantly affected by its quality.
