Economic Evaluation of a Pre-Hospital Protocol for Patients with Suspected Acute Stroke

Abstract: BackgroundIn regional and rural Australia, patients experiencing ischemic stroke do not have equitable access to an intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Although thrombolysis with tPA is a clinically proven and cost-effective treatment for eligible stroke patients, there are few economic evaluations on pre-hospital triage interventions to improve access to tPA.AimTo describe the potential cost-effectiveness of the pre-hospital acute stroke triage (PAST) protocol implemented to provide pr… Show more

“…Lahiry et al (33) recently published an economic analysis focused above all on pre-hospital phase in patients with suspected acute stroke in Australian rural areas. They recommended an improved protocol for the care for stroke patients outside large urban agglomerations and compared all costs under their protocol and in current standard care.…”

“…Acute cerebrovascular disease (ACVD), or stroke, incurs substantial medical expenditure [1,2]. In general, stroke can be classified into four types: ischemic stroke, spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and transient ischemic attack (TIA).…”

“…The incidence differs in men and women, and female patients are generally older than male patients [4]. Stroke incurs a high medical expenditure, in particular attracting high costs for emergency and intensive care facilities in cases of sICH [2,7]. Many factors affect the outcome of ACVD, and comorbidities are critical risk factors.…”
