Microgrids consist of multiple parallel-connected distributed generation (DG) units with coordinated control strategies, which are able to operate in both grid-connected and islanded mode. Microgrids are attracting more and more attention since they can alleviate the stress of main transmission systems, reduce feeder losses, and improve system power quality. When the islanded microgrids are concerned, it is important to maintain system stability and achieve load power sharing among the multiple parallel-connected DG units. However, the poor active and reactive power sharing problems due to the influence of impedance mismatch of the DG feeders and the different ratings of the DG units are inevitable when the conventional droop control scheme is adopted. Therefore, the adaptive/improved droop control, network-based control methods and cost-based droop schemes are compared and summarized in this paper for active power sharing. Moreover, nonlinear and unbalanced loads could further affect the reactive power sharing when regulating the active power, and it is difficult to share the reactive power accurately only by using the enhanced virtual impedance method. Therefore, the hierarchical control strategies are utilized as supplements of the conventional droop controls and virtual impedance methods. The improved hierarchical control approaches such as the algorithms based on graph theory, multi-agent system, the gain scheduling method and predictive control have been proposed to achieve proper reactive power sharing for islanded microgrids and eliminate the effect of the communication delays on hierarchical control. Finally, the future research trends on islanded microgrids are also discussed in this paper.

A microgrid (MG) is a cyber-physical system that facilitates integration of several distributed renewable energy resources. In the last decade, several efforts were made to standardise the framework of a cyber-physical MG network and its control structure. In this perspective, various studies discussing the different control techniques are reported in the literature. However, a comprehensive and systematic review of a cyber-physical MG is discussed rarely. In this study, a comprehensive review of a MG architecture and hierarchical control structure in both islanded and grid-connected modes are presented. The hierarchical control of the MG includes primary, secondary, and tertiary control. Recent studies provide significant opportunities in dividing the control task among various layers resulting in a distributed framework. This study analyses the cyber and physical networks separately while discussing the primary, centralised, and distributed secondary control levels with their merits, demerits, and typical applications. A Venn diagram analysis is also presented that clearly distinguishes the primary control scheme in different research sub-areas. Furthermore, the MG communication structure, protocols, design, constraints, and cyber security are also reviewed systematically. Finally, future trends are summarised based on the state-of-the-art MG research. 1.1 Comparison with existing review articles Unlike the existing review articles in the literature [6, 9, 32-35], this paper gives a detailed hierarchical control structure with primary, secondary, and tertiary control levels along with a detailed discussion on communication constraints in a cyber-physical MG network. The state-of-the-art review presented in [6] discusses the issues concerning MGs and provides an account of research in areas related to MG, i.e. DG, applications of power electronics, economic issues, MG operation and control, MG clusters, and protection and communication issues. However, the discussion is limited to the overall introduction and does not provide deep insight and comparison on the control schemes at different levels and communication constraints as the one presented in this work.

Economic analysis is an important tool in evaluating the performances of microgrid (MG) operations and sizing. Optimization techniques are required for operating and sizing an MG as economically as possible. Various optimization approaches are applied to MGs, which include classic and artificial intelligence techniques. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of the most frequently used methods for cost optimization due to its high performance and flexibility. PSO has various versions and can be combined with other intelligent methods to realize improved performance optimization. This paper reviews the cost minimization performances of various economic models that are based on PSO with regard to MG operations and sizing. First, PSO is described, and its performance is analyzed. Second, various objective functions, constraints and cost functions that are used in MG optimizations are presented. Then, various applications of PSO for MG sizing and operations are reviewed. Additionally, optimal operation costs that are related to the energy management strategy, unit commitment, economic dispatch and optimal power flow are investigated.
