Economic Studies Reinforce Efforts to Safeguard Specialty Crops in the United States

Abstract: Pathogen-tested foundation plant stocks are the cornerstone of sustainable specialty crop production. They provide the propagative units that are used to produce clean planting materials, which are essential as the first-line management option of diseases caused by graft-transmissible pathogens such as viruses, viroids, bacteria and phytoplasmas. In the United States, efforts to produce, maintain and distribute pathogen-tested propagative material of specialty crops are spearheaded by centers of the National C… Show more

“…Grapevine leafroll‐associated viruses (GLRaVs) are among the most consequential pathogens affecting grapevine and have considerable economic impact (Atallah et al, 2012 ; Fuchs et al, 2021 ; Ricketts et al, 2015 ). GLRaVs are diverse and belong to the family Closteroviridae, with six species and numerous strains in three genera (Fuchs, 2020 ; Naidu et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Replants should be sourced from nursery vine stocks (scions and rootstocks) that have been extensively tested for viruses, including leafroll viruses, and shown to be clean. To this end, it is appropriate to recognize the efforts of the USDA-APHIS-sponsored National Clean Plant Network program (Anonymous 2021) in support of the sustainable production and maintenance of clean vine Spatial roguing minimizes leafroll incidence stocks in foundation vineyards and the distribution of clean material to nurseries and growers (Fuchs et al 2021, Gergerich et al 2015.…”

“…For example, in California, estimates of the economic damage caused by grapevine leafroll-associated 3 (GLRaV-3) as the major virus involved in grapevine leafroll disease are more than $90 million annually [2,3]. Grapevine red blotch disease also causes more than $69,500 in damages per hectare over the predicted 25-year life span of a vineyard [4,5].…”
