This conceptual article delves into the intricate relationship between public health and environmental health, using the underutilisation of beekeeping in the United States as a case study. The concept of food security, established after the 1996 World Food Summit, encompasses pillars of availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability. This thorough framework creates the foundation for comprehending the crucial aspects of food security and prepares the reader for a careful examination of the implications presented by the US honeybee colonies’ decline. The decline in honeybee colonies in the United States poses a significant threat to food production. Loss of honeybee colonies and the lack of attention to apiculture have far-reaching consequences for public and environmental health. This article explores the often-overlooked intersection of food security and beekeeping, recognizing the intricate dependencies between pollinators and crop sustainability. Honeybees, crucial pollinators for essential food crops, offer not only ecological benefits but also socio-economic opportunities. The article also highlights beekeeping’s diverse contributions, such as enhanced pollination, increased crop yields, ecosystem health, and climate change resilience. Despite the evident benefits of beekeeping for food security and the nutritional richness of bee products, commercial beekeeping in the USA is monopolised by a mere 1.4% of beekeepers. The 1.4% commercial beekeepers control 89.7% of country colonies, an indication of the huge neglect of apiculture. This neglect led to an alarming 48.2% loss of honeybee colonies between April 2022 and April 2023. This unprecedented decline, often overlooked, highlights a deficiency in attention and strategic planning within agriculture, underscoring broader implications for public and environmental health in the United States. This article introduces a theoretical framework incorporating ecological systems, social ecology, system theory, resource-based views, livelihood diversification, and sustainability, emphasizing their role in understanding and improving food security through beekeeping.

The climate is described by the predominant atmospheric conditions in a particular region and influences several human activities. In agriculture, water availability defines the growth and yield of crops and can be obtained by the water balance. The climate classification also aids to identify suitable areas for agricultural crops. Thus, the aim of this work was to elaborate the water balance and perform the climate classification through the method of Thornthwaite and Mather (1955) for six weather stations (Bohicon, Cotonou-Airport, Kandi-Airport, Natitingou, Parakou-Airport and Savè) located in Benin, Western Africa. For the execution of this work, monthly series of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration from 1970 to 2015 were used. Once the monthly water balance of the six seasons was elaborated, it was observed that the rainy (dry) period decreases (increases) from the coast (Cotonou-Airport) to the north of Benin (Kandi-Airport) and, coincides with Boreal summer and part of autumn (Boreal winter and part of spring). Regarding the climate classification, the Cotonou-Airport station was characterized as Subhumid Megathermal climate with moderate winter deficit (C2wA’a’); the stations of Bohicon and Savè presented similar climate classification with Subhumid Dry Megathermal climate with low or without water surplus (C1dA’a’); Natitingou with Subhumid Dry climate Megathermal with large summer surplus (C1s2A’a’); Parakou-Airport with Subhumid climate Dry Megathermic with moderate summer surplus (C1sA’a’) and, Kandi-Airport presented Semi-arid Megathermal climate with moderate summer surplus (DsA’a’). In Benin, subsistence and rainfed farming showed greater risk in the north of the country due to the decrease in the rainy season and the water surplus from the coast (south) to the north of the country, with the increase in aridity.

Chez le palmier à huile, le taux de nouaison des fruits est fortement lié à la densité des populations d'insectes pollinisateurs. Les populations du principal pollinisateur, Elaeidobius kamerunicus, ont été suivies dans le but d'identifier les facteurs influençant leurs fluctuations. Des prélèvements d'épillets ont été effectués sur les inflorescences mâles et des captures ont été réalisées sur les inflorescences femelles dans trois localités pendant 24 mois. Les résultats ont montré qu'à La Mé, le nombre d'inflorescences mâles influence positivement le nombre d'E. kamerunicus/épillet (r = 0,81 ; p ˂ 0,0001) et le nombre d'E. kamerunicus visitant les fleurs femelles (r = 0,77 ; p ˂ 0,0001). A Grand-Béréby, le nombre d'E. kamerunicus/épillet est corrélé négativement (r =-0,46 ; p = 0,027) avec le nombre de jours de pluies et positivement (r = 0,51; p = 0,012) avec l'insolation. A Iboké, les densités sur les inflorescences mâles et femelles sont influencées négativement par le nombre de jours de pluies (r =-0,45 ; p = 0,028 et r =-0,51 ; p = 0,027). Ainsi, l'abondance d'E. kamerunicus dans les plantations dépend en partie du nombre d'inflorescences mâles, de la pluie et de l'insolation.
